Brian Crane, trumpet
Brian Crane plays trumpet and flugelhorn with Excalibur and is one
of the founding members. He is a graduate of Highland High School in
Highland, Indiana.
After high school, Brian attended Ohio Northern University on a
talent scholarship to work on a bachelor's degree in music performance.
After earning his bachelor's degree in music performance in 2000,
Brian entered the United States Marine Corps and earned the title
'Marine'. He was selected to be a performing member of "The Commandant's
Own" United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps. Brian returned home to
the Northwest Indiana area in 2004 after completing his enlistment in
the Marine Corps. While back in Northwest Indiana, Brian was active
in numerous jazz and concert ensembles including being the principle
trumpet of the South Shore Chamber Orchestra and the Highland Community
Band where he was not only a performing member but also the music
librarian and guest conductor. In the fall of 2005 Brian began
graduate study at Columbia College Chicago in Arts, Entertainment,
and Media Management. In September 2006 Brian and his fiancée, Erica,
relocated to Columbia, SC. Both currently work for the
Historic Columbia
Foundation-Erica is the Director of Preservation and Brian is the
Development Coordinator. Brian is also finishing his masters degree
in Arts Administration through Goucher College and is actively seeking
to become a part of and contribute to the local Columbia arts and
cultural community.
Rochelle Erwin, trombone
Rochelle Erwin plays trombone with Excalibur and is one of
the founding members. She is a graduate of Irmo High School in Irmo, SC.
Rochelle Erwin had her musical beginnings on piano and then violin, but
showing no talent for musical instrument that involved finger coordination
her mother encouraged her to pursue other interests. Ms. Erwin heeded her
mother's advice until she saw the trombone section at a football game. She
immediately knew that trombone would solve all of her musical problems.
While at Irmo High School she was involved in bands that won state
competitions, traveled the United States, played in the Orange Bowl
parade, was on stages in NY and Chicago among many other things. Her
musical education was continued at University of Illinois where she
was part of the Wind Ensemble that toured England and a trombone ensemble
that toured the south western United States. Ms. Erwin transferred to the
University of North Texas to complete her musical education. She played
in the jazz bands, brass band, and concert band. She was part of the
inaugural ceremonies of UNT's armadillo shaped concert hall. Ms. Erwin
can be seen around Columbia playing trombone for the Palmetto Concert
Band, Columbia Community Jazz band, Columbia Concert Band, Bones of
Intention and at various other places in the community.
Rick Lehner, horn
Rick Lehner plays horn with Excalibur and is one of the
founding members. He is a graduate of Shortridge High School in Indianapolis,
Indiana.
Richard Lehner earned both a both a Bachelor's and Master's
degree from Indiana University. He has taught at Indiana
University in Bloomington and is a former faculty member at The
University of Florida in Gainesville. Mr. Lehner is currently a
member of the Columbia Community Concert Band and has played with the
Lake Murray Symphony. He has been a member of The Gainesville
Chamber Orchestra and The Gainesville Brass Quintet and has played
with The Central Florida Symphony, The Central Florida Philharmonic,
The Valdosta Symphony, The University of Florida Symphony, The
Bloomington Symphony, The Indianapolis Philharmonic, and the
Gainesville Community Band. He is a member of the International Horn
Society and has performed for a variety of churches and musical
theaters including The Gainesville Community Playhouse, The Ocala
Civic Theater, The Richard Dickson Dinner Theater, The Golden Hills
Theater, The Melrose Music Theater, and The Bloomington Theater. He
has been active in civic organizations including the Gainesville
Rotary Club, The J. Wayne Reitz Union Board, The Gainesville Chamber
of Commerce, and served in leadership positions with regional and
national organizations including The Association of America's Public
Television Stations, The National Educational Telecommunications
Association, The Public Broadcasting Service, and The Corporation for
Public Broadcasting. Mr. Lehner retired after 30 years as the
General Manager for public television and radio stations WUFT-FM,
WJUF-FM, and WUFT-TV Channel 5 in Gainesville. He is currently Vice
President for Operations for the
National Educational
Telecommunications Association in Columbia.
Joyce Maley, trumpet
Joyce Maley plays trumpet, flugelhorn and cornet with
Excalibur and is one of the founding members. Joyce is a graduate of
Thomas Downey High School in Modesto, California.
Joyce Maley earned her Bachelor of Music at the University
of Oregon, her Master of Arts in Education at Chapman University and
Master of Arts in Counseling Services at Eastern Washington University.
She is currently pursuing degree work at Auburn University. Joyce is
Principal Horn of Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra and Columbia Community
Orchestra. She also performs on horn with the Florence Symphony, Columbia
Community Concert Band and Camden Community Concert Band, and has
perfomed in the past with Midlands Brass Quintet, Sumter Community
Concert Band and the Original Five Points Wild Irish Band. Joyce recently
retired from a career in the United States Air Force. During that time she
was a member of the 523rd Air Force Band (Riverside, CA) and the 724th Air
Force Band (Tacoma, WA) where she performed in the concert band, show band,
brass quintet, and as trumpet soloist. Upon graduation
from Officer Training School she was assigned to the Band of the Air Force
Reserve as Deputy Commander and Assistant Conductor, then moved to the Air
Force Band of the Gulf Coast (Biloxi, MS) were she was the commander and
conductor. Joyce has played principal trumpet with the Modesto Symphony
Orchestra (California), the Eugene Symphony (Oregon) and Montgomery Symphony
(Alabama). Joyce is currently celebrating her 20th year as the owner of
Hurricane Chinooks, where she
raises and shows Chinook dogs. She is also the owner/operator of the alpaca
farm, Hurricane Alpacas. Joyce also
works as an educational consultant, as time allows.
Payne Seal, tuba
Payne Seal plays tuba with Excalibur and is one of the
founding members. He is a graduate of Picayune Memorial High School in
Picayune, MS.
Payne grew up in Picayune, MS, about 45 miles east of New Orleans,
where he played trumpet for a year in beginner band before switching
to the tuba. He played throughout high school, making his state honor
band four years and making first chair three of those years. He continued
his studies at Mississippi State University, earning a bachelor's degree
in mathematics, as well as staying busy playing in the concert band, wind
ensemble, brass quintet, orchestra, marching band, and basketball pep band,
with which he played at the NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament in New
York City. He moved to South Carolina in 1999 and has worked as a
software developer at Blue Cross and USC; he now works as an independent
software consultant. He currently plays with the Columbia Community
Concert Band, the Original Five Points Wild Irish Band, Die Lustigen
Musikanten (a traditional German band), and a tuba quartet. He has
played abroad in Australia, Austria, and Ireland, including marching
in the Dublin St. Patrick's Day Parade. When not playing his tuba,
he enjoys volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, reading, traveling,
camping, and riding his Honda VFR and Kawasaki Ninja motorcycles.
